o come, o come...

by Zach Kincaid

O come,
Between Heaven and Hell,
Earth, formless and void.
O come
Between God’s breath and the serpent’s deception,
a couple sins.
Emmanuel,
Between Abraham and Yahweh,
an everlasting covenant made.
and ransom captive
Between Egypt and the Promised Land,
a story.
Israel;
Between the river and the sea,
the kingdom of God.
who mourns
Between Deborah and Zedekiah,
Isaiah.
in lonely exile here
Between the lion’s den and the Temple rebuilt,
Cyrus the Great.
until
Between Alexander and Augustus,
the lights rekindled.
the Son of God
Between Jerusalem and Egypt,
Bethlehem.
appears.
Between the Mother of God and Joseph,
Messiah, Christ the Lord.
Rejoice!
Between the angels and shepherds,
a “Hallelujah”.
Rejoice!
Between incarnation and crucifixion,
an invitation.
Emmanuel
Between resurrection and ascension,
the firstborn from the dead.
shall come to thee
Between Israel and everyone else,
the way made straight to redeem our sins.
O Israel.
Between Heaven and Hell,
time to accept His gift of salvation.
Rejoice!
